The principal activities of this subsector were personal and household services, social and related community services, and recreational and cultural services rendered by the private sector. As the Republic of Cyprus became a wealthier and more diverse society, this branch's share of GDP grew, from 3.4 percent in 1979 to 5.5 percent in 1988 (increasing fivefold in current prices). Its share of the work force grew even more, from 4.7 percent of the gainfully employed in 1979 to 7.2 percent in 1987.
